Comments about the work: Miklós Maros, Capriccio per Chitarra (1985). This work was commissioned forthe guitar competition at the 1986 Ulricehamn Guitar Festival. The word"competitions" immediately puts one in mind of virtuoso playing, and indeed,virtuoso pieces make up a great deal of the guitar repertoire. I think this influenced me when I began shaping the piece. The result turned outto be one long melodic line with many tonal repetitions or repeated figuresbetween the components of the line. The musical material consists mainly ofthese repetitions in rapid semiquaver figures, with alternations betweenfour-tone and threetone figures interrupting the onward drive. The harmony derives added pungency from the use of fourths. I his, then, is avirtuoso piece, and I believe that performing it will give guitarists a chance ofshowing their paces. Text: Miklós Maros.
