- Relief is the second piece in a trilogy with the collective name RE-cycle. The first piece, Respirit, for percussion ensemble and tape, was premièred at the Invensionen Festival in Berlin 1993 by the Kroumata Percussion Ensemble. In Relief I reused some of the sound material from the tape part of Respirit and also added new sounds. The basic material consists of recorded percussion instruments, guitar, 'objets trouvés’ and environmental sounds. Relief is composed using a recycling technique where sounds return in new, processed shapes. In the middle of the piece the sound material has been processed to such an extreme that practically nothing remains except noise. After a powerful eruption and an abrupt ending of this phase, the original material returns and gradually develops towards a new, different and hollow sound world.Jens Hedman
